In this article, I'm going to take you through some of the ways you can monetize your skills and earn money as a web developer.
Web Developer Jobs
How to make money from web development, You can be a web developer in a company and manage their applications. And you can get paid for your work as per your company policy. This is the most basic way you can make money. I am sure you also know this or you are already working in a company as a web developer.
Creating web applications and websites is not specific to a particular company. This is something that everyone needs right now.
If you're thinking "I'm not here for that. Tell me something I don't know." Don't worry we'll dive right into it.
So, I was telling you, what you will find on the internet is the work of a web developer. So your skills are in high demand. So, why not monetize it on your terms. Why not freelance your services??
Freelance Web Development
Be your own boss and do what you want in your home or anywhere else. Offer your services to those who need them. You can take money for your work on your terms. This means you can:
- Charges per project,
- hourly charges,
- or even daily.
It doesn't matter if you have a full-time job. You can still do part-time freelancing and earn some extra money. And if you get your freelance game on point, you can earn a lot as a freelance web developer.
That is everyone's question.
"How do I become a freelancer?"
"How do I get clients who need my services?"
"How to attract inbound clients?"
Here we go…
Create a portfolio website
How to make money from web development, A portfolio website shows a summary of your work to your prospects. As a web developer, this can be very easy for you. It's also an opportunity to show your prospects your web development skills.
A basic portfolio website should answer the following:
- Who are you
- What do you do / what services do you offer?
- Why are you a good fit?
- Work samples (at least 4)
- Client testimonial (if any)
Your portfolio website is the first thing your prospect sees. So, make the first impression, the best impression.
Now you are ready with your portfolio. The next step is looking for clients.
There are billions of people around the world. No one will come to you until you are already popular. If you provide a service, it is your responsibility to market yourself and let everyone know that you offer this service
How do you do it?
- Create an online presence
- Instagram/Facebook
Create an Instagram business page and post consistently. Target the right audience and attract them to your page. Link to a Facebook page simultaneously so you can post the same content on both platforms simultaneously.
Engage with fellow developers. Comment on their posts. Appreciate their work if you like it. This way you can build a community of fellow developers and you can quickly reach your target audience. Make good use of Instagram's bio section. It should display what services you offer and finally a CTA in your portfolio link.
PS: You can't grow big in 1 day on these platforms. Consistency and patience are the keys.
How to make money from web development, LinkedIn is a professional platform where you can connect with your fellow developers and potential clients. Check your LinkedIn profile score on Resume Worded and improve it with its suggestions. This will make your profile stand out.
You can also try other social media platforms but I recommend these two as it works well for all people.
Work group
You can join various web developer groups. On Facebook, if you search with 'web developer jobs', you will find many group recommendations. Join some groups and you will find that there are tons of job postings every day. You can reach those people and convert them into your clients. You can also connect with people there and solve your queries with developers who freelance their work like you.
Similarly, you can find job groups on other social media platforms as well.
Freelance website
There are various websites like Freelancer, Upwork, People Per Hour, Fiver etc which will help you earn good money but I would not recommend these sites for those who are just starting out. Because these websites have a lot of competition and most experienced freelancers are preferred. So, I suggest that you first do some projects outside, earn some points and then enter these sites.
If you want to get clients fast, you can try freelance teaching. Teach web development to beginners and I am sure there is a huge market for it. You can use platforms like Wyzant, TakeLessons, TeacherOn etc. to get clients. Getting clients on these platforms is relatively easy. So give it a try!
Getting your first client
How to make money from web development, Getting that first client is the hardest part of freelancing. Sometimes, it can take months to land a client of your choice. This is because when you are starting out you may have the skills but not the experience.
And a client will usually look to your experience to see if you can deliver their work professionally. For this, you may need social proof to convince your clients. These are testimonials from people who have worked with you in the past.
Now, how do you have these testimonials if you haven't worked with other clients?
Simple, ask your friends, relatives or strangers who run a business and need a good or better website and offer your services. They can recommend you and provide testimonials at your initial stage.
First offer your services at discounted rates so that you can attract more clients to you. But, don't provide your services for free. You put a lot of effort and time into this. So, you should align your prices accordingly.
After you have good clients and you are able to provide them with a great service, ask them to recommend you to their friends or business partners if needed. That way, you can spread the word and land more clients.
Web development projects are usually high-paying, so, be sure to sign a contract with your client specifying all the terms and conditions. This will bring more clarity and avoid any fraudulent activities in future projects. This will ensure that you are doing exactly what you want, no more, no less.
Always ask for feedback from your clients. You will encounter a variety of people during your freelance journey. Clients may or may not always like your work. Don't take it personally or it can ruin your peace of mind and ruin your other work as well. Instead, take these criticisms constructively and improve your work.
Other sources of income
Apart from earning money as a freelancer from various projects from your clients, you can also earn from the following sources:-
Affiliate Marketing
Join affiliate programs of various vendors you use for web development and earn money for your referrals. You can use your social media platform or blog/website to share these affiliate links.
This can be best utilized by signing up for any affiliate account on GoDaddy, Bluehost, Hostinger, A2hosting, etc. and signing up your clients on these sites using your affiliate link. You can earn very good amount in commission.
Online courses
You can create online courses and tutorials on web development and put them on your blog or YouTube channel. You can even take courses for various online course platforms like Udemy, Coursera etc. But taking a good web development course is not enough. You need to market it and reach the right audience. If you can do this, it will be a great source of passive income.
